The controversial new WhatsApp privacy policy is causing concern over account suspensions and deletion. With the February 8, 2021 deadline looming, those that will refuse to accept the new terms are increasingly worried about their future account standing. So, will WhatsApp delete accounts on Feb 8? Here’s the latest on the situation.
Is WhatsApp going to suspend accounts on February 8, 2021?
Instant messaging application WhatsApp has announced that it will soon start sharing its user data with Facebook. Naturally, a lot of people aren’t happy about that. Many users have already switched to Signal — a competing app with better data handling policies — in response. But, will those that stick around and refuse to accept the new privacy policy be banned for it?
No WhatsApp accounts will receive a ban, suspension, or deletion on February 8, 2021. WhatsApp has delayed the rollout of its new privacy policy based on the backlash from its users, but, furthermore, accounts “will not” be deleted for declining the policy changes when they’re eventually implemented. The new WhatsApp terms will now arrive starting May 15, 2021.

The delay received official confirmation in a WhatsApp blog post. The app will take this opportunity to “do a lot more to clear up the misinformation around how privacy and security work.” After that, users will be approached “gradually” and given time to “review the policy at their own pace.”
Although WhatsApp assures users that they won’t get a ban in relation to the new policy, it doesn’t directly address what the outcome is for those who refuse it. Although their accounts might not face deletion, some level of access could (hypothetically) be restricted. Essentially, that would serve as an indefinite suspension.
