How to fix the PS5 no sound bug

Some PS5 owners are encountering an audio output glitch. When affected, users’ PlayStation 5 consoles produce no sound at all — almost as if the volume was on mute. It’s a major issue, naturally, but is there a quick and easy fix? Here’s the need-to-know on the PS5 no sound bug.

When one of the main PS5 selling points is its introduction of immersive 3D audio, not being able to hear anything is a big problem. In the worst-case scenario, faulty hardware can cause PS5 sound issues and require replacement or repairs. Before it comes to that, however, there are several potential workarounds to fix the issue at home.

Press the mute button on the DualSense.
- The mute button is beneath the PS button on the DualSense. This tends to bring the sound back.
Make sure that the volume isn’t turned down or on mute.
- It seems obvious, but best to check before getting any more in-depth.
Plug the DualSense controller into the PS5 console.
- The wireless Bluetooth connection can interfere with some television models’ audio.
Hard reboot the TV by holding down the power button, either on the device or via its remote.
- Alternatively, place the TV on standby before unplugging it and then reconnecting power.
Connecting a headset to the PlayStation 5 via USB disables TV sound output.
- Using optical out was a workaround on PS4, but this is not possible on PS5.
Make sure that the console is connected directly to one of the TV’s HDMI ports.
- Rerouting the signal through an HDMI switcher or similar device can cause audio (and image) problems.
Try using a different HDMI port.
- Some TVs have multiple HDMI ports, each with different specifications and potential levels of wear and tear.
Swap out the HDMI cable connecting the PS5 to the television.
- A damaged cable could result in the partial or complete loss of audio.
