How to get Overwatch League tokens

Knowing how to get Overwatch League tokens will open up a whole ton of new skins for players. This currency lets players not only purchase jersey-like skins for every team in the Overwatch League, but also special skins for MVPs, champion teams, and the finals. Blizzard is currently selling a new skin for Echo and Roadhog for 200 tokens so players need to start stocking up. Here’s how to earn OWL tokens and get them for free in 2021.

The easiest and most direct way to get Overwatch League tokens is to buy them. These tokens are on every storefront, even on the Switch (just make sure to find the right submenu in the eShop). They come in multiple bundles:

  • $4.99 for 100 tokens
  • $9.99 for 200 tokens
  •  $19.99 for 400 tokens
  • $39.99 for 900 tokens
  • $99.99 for 2,600 tokens

There is currently no way to earn Overwatch League tokens by playing the game. This is a completely separate currency from the credits in the game. Blizzard is unlikely to change that. Blizzard sometimes holds sales for tokens as it did in January 2020.

But just players can’t earn OWL tokens in the game, doesn’t mean they can’t get them for free in other ways. First, players can log in, link their account to their Battle.net account, and watch the Overwatch League as it airs on the official website or through the mobile app. Replays usually do not count but there are sometimes rebroadcasts of the grand finals that do yield tokens.

Watching live matches earn players five tokens per watched hour (sometimes there are special bonus periods that yield 10 or 15 per hour). Watched time is always being tracked so 30 minutes in one session and 30 minutes in another will count for an hour. Don’t leave the stream muted and it must also be “in focus throughout viewing” so don’t minimize it or otherwise bury it. Tokens don’t appear instantly so don’t panic if they take some time to funnel into their account. Blizzard says it takes up to 48 hours for tokens to appear.

This works for every system but not in every country. People in Cuba, Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Sudan, Crimea, and Syria, and in “other countries where restricted or prohibited by law” won’t be able to get free tokens. Supported countries are Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Austria, Poland, Belgium, Russia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Canada, South Korea, Chile, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, France, Taiwan, Germany, Thailand, Mexico, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States.

There are other ways to get free OWL tokens, but they can be quite rare. Verified OWL accounts will sometimes give tokens away or hold contests on Twitter so it is worth it to follow some of the OWL teams. Various OWL players have also been known to give away token codes so, again, follow some of them on Twitter.

Make sure Blizzard is allowed to send emails for the OWL as it will be a good way to be notified of possible giveaways or promotions. The OWL Recall Division is also likely to have token-related giveaways in the future so be sure to sign up.

Can you earn Overwatch League tokens on Twitch?

The OWL signed a deal with YouTube for $160 million for three years according to EsportsObserver, so the OWL won’t be on Twitch at all, much less in an official fashion. Because of this, players won’t be able to earn Overwatch League tokens on Twitch at least in the near future.
