In one of the Clank’s puzzle missions, Gary says that Clank is “a friend of [Gary’s] father.” It’s later made clear that the father is the Plumber, who has frequently appeared in previous games.
The Plumber has always been a mysterious figure. He’s capable of quickly moving across the galaxy and even appears inside of Clank’s subconscious. He has proven self-aware by acknowledging his presence in a video game.
Fans will no doubt be happy to see the mystery of the Plumber pay off in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, as the game makes sense of his omnipresence and omniscience. The Plumber is clearly able to move between space and time to aid the heroes on their missions and now it all makes sense.
It’s unclear how long the writers at Insomniac Games have been planning the Plumber’s true purpose. Seeds had been planted from the very first Ratchet and Clank game, so it’s clear the Plumber was never just a plumber.
