Is Steam Store Down? DNS failure, black screen, not loading explained

Steam store is down, alongside a host of other gaming services, with each of them having been hit by some kind of outage, bringing several major gaming platforms offline. The PC storefront is currently offline. This has restricted access to the storefront, as well as some online services for games. If you are looking to log into your favorite game currently, it’s possible you will struggle to get online, as users are being hit with DNS failure messages, the store not loading, or a plain black screen.

Steam Store DNS failure and why it’s down explained

Steam thankfully hasn’t been rendered completely useless. This seems to currently only be hitting the Steam Store. Currently, friend lists are still available and you can connect to games. Access to your library is not hindered and you can play any game you have installed. For games that don’t require a connection, this shouldn’t be a problem at all. Through limited testing, some online games work too, like Destiny 2. However, this appears to be wider than just Valve’s service, and some games may individually be hit by this outage as well.

However, if you were looking to buy anything, that option currently isn’t available. If you try to log in to the storefront through a web browser, you are met with a DNS failure server error. The site says: “The server is temporarily unable to service your request. Please try again later.” Unfortunately, this extends to the Steam app as well. If you try to access the store via the Store tab, you are met with a black screen.

Right now, your options are limited. As this doesn’t seem to be a problem on Valve’s side, we’re just going to have to wait this one out. That said, your game library is entirely accessible through the Steam executable so hopefully, it won’t get in the way of your gaming time.

While this is only temporary, the long term future of Valve looks promising. The Steam Deck is coming and it will get improved compatibility.
