If you’re a Pokemon fan, you’re sure to be delighted at the news that a Pokemon Netflix live-action series is on its way based on the beloved games and anime. It isn’t the franchise’s first foray into live-action productions, as 2019’s Detective Pikachu was a box-office hit. However, it is the first time that Nintendo’s staple property will appear on the small screen in live-action. What is the release date for the Pokemon Netflix live-action series?
Currently, Netflix hasn’t given a concrete release date for the Pokemon show, as it was only revealed yesterday. That said, we can take a guess at its release by having a look at Netflix’s usual production timelines. Roughly speaking, we should see the show in either 2023 or 2024.
A good example to compare it to is Netflix’s The Witcher, based on the books and games of the same name. Netflix announced the show in May 2017, and it took a year to write the scripts. There was then just over a year of filming and post-production, before an eventual release in December 2019. If we take this 31-month window as Netflix’s average production time, then we can expect the Pokemon Netflix series in February 2024.
Of course, there are plenty of factors to consider here. Firstly, the writing of Pokemon likely won’t take as long. It doesn’t have to adapt an existing book as The Witcher did. The massive production values of The Witcher will also have increased the amount of production time it took. Netflix also make it sound like the show is in the writing and productions stages right now, meaning it’ll drastically cut the amount of pre-production required. Therefore, don’t hold your breath for a release before 2023 – this is a big project, and Netflix are bound to take their time.
