Why does the PS5 have so little storage

Why does the PS5 have so little storage?

Nearly a year on from release, and it seems like the PS5 teething problems are starting to go away. There are more games out, more consoles available, and users are (impatiently) waiting for a PS5 SSD storage update. Until then, they have to make do with the 825 GB of hard drive storage currently installed in the console. As games are getting larger in size, space is running out faster – so why does the PS5 have so little storage?

Why is the PS5 storage so small?

Why does the PS5 have so little storage

While 825 GB isn’t a tiny amount of storage, it seems to go very quickly on the console. This is for two reasons: firstly, games are taking up more storage than ever before, and secondly, the system storage takes up room on the SSD too.

Interestingly, the only model currently available is the 825 GB version. It’s more than the 500 GB that the PS4 had on launch, but later iterations of the console had 1 TB of storage. Therefore, it’s strange to see the first PS5 having less storage.

If you boot up your console and check your storage breakdown, you’ll usually see a good chunk of storage invested in the ‘Other’ section. Some consoles will even see upwards of 100 GB worth of ‘Other’ storage on their console. This is where the system’s essential files are stored, and you can’t delete or reduce them at all – meaning that big amount of storage space is completely gone.

Also, it’s worth remembering that games, and their updates, are getting bigger than ever. A big hitter like Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War can reach heights of 200 GB needed to play. As games continue getting bigger, it’s harder to fit as many on your SSD as you could on previous generations. There is hope, as Sony has promised you’ll be able to upgrade your internal storage soon. Until then, you’ve got to use that 825 GB wisely.

In other news, a new Pokemon Go mod has emerged that breaks the microtransaction and Rocket Radar systems. The Halo Infinite beta is live – but a lot of long-term fans have been excluded from invites.
