How to fix Steam stuck on patching and update

PC gamers may find that Steam gets stuck on patching or stuck on an update. This unfortunate error can prevent you from playing PC games, with it ensuring that the game won’t start as it remains stuck on updating. Fortunately, there’s a way to fix this problem.

If Steam is stuck on patching and you’re not able to update the game as a result, there are two solutions. The first is to check that the game you’re trying to patch isn’t down for server maintenance; sometimes an offline game won’t fully patch until its servers are back up. The second is to close down the program through the task manager and reload it. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete
  2. Select Task Manager
  3. Go to Processes
  4. Right-click the Steam process and select End Task

You can now reload Steam and resume the patch, with it now likely working. If it doesn’t work, be sure to check the game’s official support pages to ensure that it isn’t currently offline.

If none of the above works, you can always change your download region which often fixes issues with game updates. To do this, go to the Steam menu, then select Downloads and change the Download Region. It’s better if you choose a nearby server, with this also often speeding up slow downloads, too.

In other news, Steam will be going portable soon after Valve announced the Steam Deck. However, buyers were disappointed to learn that pre-orders have been pushed back.
