Humankind City Cap: How to increase it

Humankind City Cap: How to increase it

Your empire in Humankind can only grow so far before it starts to take a toll on your Influence. How many cities you’re allowed to have before taking a penalty is determined by your City Capacity, which starts at a default value of two in the Ancient Era. Thankfully, your capacity can be raised over time, assuming you spend your resources wisely. Here’s how to increase your city cap in Humankind.

What the Humankind city cap is and how to increase it

The city cap in Humankind is the maximum amount of cities you’re allowed to have in your empire. Exceeding the City Capacity incurs a penalty in the form of Influence. Thankfully, you can increase your city cap by researching various technologies.

In the Ancient Era, your empire will start with a City Capacity of two. Unfortunately, that number does not increase as you reach into further eras. Instead, you’ll need to increase your maximum City Capacity through research.

Several technologies allow you to increase the city cap in Humankind:

  • Foreign Outposts
  • Mercantilism
  • Philosophy
  • Supply Lines
  • Theology
  • Three-Masted Ships
  • Urban Planning

Each of these technologies provides +1 to the city cap. The City Capacity can also be further upgraded with the Leadership Civic, Materials Procurement Civic, and the Achaemenid Persians Legacy Trait.

Of course, it’s not strictly necessary to raise this limit. The penalty for having too many cities in your empire is Influence, and if you’re playing right, you should have plenty to spare. The cost in Influence rises per extra city, however, and having too many can quickly deplete your resources.

All you need to increase the city cap in Humankind is to spend your Science on new technology. Alternatively, small increases can be gained from specific Civics or Legacy traits. Otherwise, you risk incurring penalties to Influence for each city that goes over your empire’s City Capacity.
