Fans of Shin Godzilla have been clamoring for news on a sequel since the film’s 2016 release. The kaiju action movie was set outside of the mainstream Godzilla continuity, bringing the lizard monster back to Japan to wreak havoc. Produced by Toho Pictures, who have worked on Godzilla movies since 1954, a sequel was announced and then canceled in 2018. If you want any updates on it, you’re in the right place.
Is there a Shin Godzilla 2 release date?
Sadly, no. Toho canned Shin Godzilla 2 in May 2018. The film is still without a release date.
Initially, Toho canceled Shin Godzilla 2 as they opted to take the character towards a shared universe rather than a single canon of films. The animated Godzilla movies Planet of the Monsters, City on the Edge of Battle, and The Planet Eater followed this. These anime films released between 2017 and 2018. At that time, Shin Godzilla 2 was still on the cards. However, the success of this trilogy ultimately caused Toho to opt towards a multiversal approach, rather than one Godzilla continuity.
Since then, there haven’t been any Toho Godzilla films, due to a legal clause with Legendary Pictures. They’re the studio behind the live-action Godzilla movies, most recently releasing Godzilla vs. Kong. They have a clause with Toho where the Japanese studio cannot release live-action Godzilla films in the same year as Legendary’s films, to avoid confusion for audiences.
However, the release of Godzilla vs. Kong was the final film under this restriction. This means legally, Toho could produce a Shin Godzilla 2 if they wanted to. Whether this will happen, it’s hard to say, as there’s still nothing to suggest the sequel will be revived. With Toho busy making Godzilla Singular Point, the Netflix anime series, it isn’t worth holding your breath for a Shin Godzilla sequel.
