One of the video game Matrix adventures is The Matrix Online, an MMO which released in 2005. Now the nostalgia is racing back for fans of the original films and their spin-off games, Matrix fans are asking one question: can you play The Matrix Online in 2021?

If you’re hoping to log back into The Matrix Online for some kung-fu, slow-mo action, we’ve got bad news. Back in 2009, Sony Online Entertainment closed down The Matrix Online’s servers. This was due to a lack of an active player base, which had dwindled in the four years since launch.
As such, the servers for The Matrix Online have been dormant for the past twelve years. Despite the sudden resurgence in franchise popularity since the announcement and subsequent trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, it doesn’t look like the MMO will be coming back. However, we can never say never. The game’s developers Monolith Productions are still in business. These days, they’re best known for making Lord of the Rings games. Most recently, they developed Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War.
Back in its heyday, The Matrix Online placed you as a redpill. You were freed from the Matrix, and catapulted into the real world. You’re let loose on Mega City, playing either as a Coder, Hacker, or Operative. As with most MMOs, you undertook a ream of sci-fi quests. You had the choice of fighting for Zion, the Machines, or the Merovingian.
While the official servers might be gone, fan communities have keptThe Matrix Online alive. Online server emulators let players explore the game’s open world in all its glory – but sadly, they don’t have the missions or plot threads. It’s not the exact Matrix Online experience, but it’s the closest we’ve currently got. However, the movie series returned decades after we thought it was finished. It may not be the end of hope quite yet.
