Where does Far Cry 6 take place location

Where is Far Cry 6 set: Is Yara a real location?

Those looking to play Far Cry 6 might be confused as to where the game takes place. After all, looking at promo material, it seems to be located in Cuba, Haiti, or some other Caribbean nation. However, that’s not the case. Instead, Far Cry 6 takes place in a fictional country, albeit one that’s very closely based on some real-world areas.

What location does Far Cry 6 take place in?

Far Cry 6 Where does the game take place location

Far Cry 6 takes place in Yara, a fictional island based primarily on Cuba (maybe too much), with some Haitian influence thrown in as well. As Yara isn’t a real place, players won’t find any familiar cities or landmarks, but the climate, environment, and aesthetic are all very Cuban in nature.

Yara’s history also closely follows Cuba’s. Fifty years before the events of Far Cry 6, the father of the main anatagonist, Anton Castillo, was the president. A revolution occurred, and Castillo’s father was executed in front of him. In the years that followed the revolution, Yara experienced sanctions and fell into economic decline. This led to the people losing faith in the revolutionary government and voting in Anton Castillo due to his promise to return Yara to prosperity.

However, after he took office, Castillo became a tyrant and enslaved Yarans to work in the tobacco fields. This tobacco is used to produce Viviro, an anti-cancer drug. Castillo hopes to use the profits from this unique drug that can only be produced with Yaran tobacco to “restore paradise.” Unfortunately, the fertilizer that must be used on the tobacco to produce Viviro is highly toxic and is slowly poisoning all the conscripted workers.

Interestingly, though Yara is clearly based on Cuba, it doesn’t replace that nation. Cuba still exists is located in the same region. Where Yara is located in the Caribbean isn’t made clear, but it must be relatively close to the United States and Central America.
