Halo Infinite crossplay looks set to be an ambitious step forward for 343 Industries’ upcoming FPS, as not only will it allow for cross-platform play between PC and Xbox consoles, but it will also offer integration with Discord and Steam.
How will Halo Infinite crossplay work?
In a new Halo Infinite PC overview, 343 Industries outlined the extent of crossplay with the game. According to the studio, the integration between the Xbox Game Bar, Discord, and Steam works seamlessly, with players able to ping one another in-game with invites, pulling everyone into the same Fireteam to play the game together. This means that even if all players aren’t currently online on the same platform, you can still send an invite to a different supported platform to get them to join you.
343 further outlined the addition in a blog post, writing:
“Out-of-game, we’ve worked closely with services like Discord and Razer Chroma RGB as well as platforms like Steam and Xbox Game Pass to ensure Infinite takes advantage of the most each has to offer for PC players. Including a rich presence in Steam and deep integration with Discord, featuring support for in-game Discord server invites.”
Xbox’s services on PC are notoriously finicky, so players having more options at their disposal to interact with and invite their friends is a welcome improvement. As 343 outlines, players can easily open up the Game Bar or use Discord and Steam to contact their friends.
Given that Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is free-to-play, it seems the goal is to make the game as accessible as possible. The PC overview was further evidence of this goal, though it remains to be seen if the process will be as seamless as hoped when Halo Infinite launches on December 8, 2021.
