For many game fans, the name Sam Fisher is synonymous with stealth action. However, the Splinter Cell series has laid dormant for years. Thankfully, that’s no longer the case, as Ubisoft has announced that it’s recently greenlit development on a new Splinter Cell remake. Naturally, players are hoping to learn more about the upcoming game’s release date and intended platforms. Is there any launch information available?
Splinter Cell remake release date and platforms
There is no confirmed release date for the upcoming Splinter Cell remake. Ubisoft has only confirmed that development has been greenlit. By all accounts, it seems development hasn’t even begun. As such, the remake of Splinter Cell may still be years from release.
Like with the game’s release date, planned platforms are also unknown. However, there is some evidence that the Splinter Cell remake won’t land on last-generation hardware.
In the game’s announcement post, Ubisoft states that the upcoming remake is being built around the Snowdrop engine. That same engine powers Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which is not available for previous-generation consoles. Instead, it’s available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Stadia, and Luna.
Since it uses Ubisoft’s latest Snowdrop engine, the Splinter Cell remake probably won’t release for the PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. It seems the engine requires the power afforded by current-generation consoles.
Of course, we’re inclined to never say never. Since the release date is likely years away, there’s no telling how we’ll be playing games by then. Most major game companies already offer their own cloud streaming services, meaning even games like Control can run on the Switch.
Unfortunately, it’s too early in development to give any more firm details. There’s no release date set for the Splinter Cell remake, and there likely won’t be one for a while. But, by the time Ubisoft is ready to reveal a launch date, we’ll certainly hear more about its planned platforms. PC, PS5, and Series X|S users should be in the clear, but everyone else should wait and see. Otherwise, the only word we’ve heard is that the new Splinter Cell game may be going open-world.
