That said, there is a rumor that PS VR2 may launch around the holiday 2022 season. This detail comes via Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources familiar with the plans. Sony hasn’t commented on the timeline, but getting the headset to market soon would make some sense. After all, the original PSVR hardware has aged rapidly amid competition from devices like the Quest 2. Sony needs a new headset to stay relevant if it hopes to maintain a foothold in the VR market.
Will PSVR 2 work with PlayStation 4?
PlayStation VR2 will not work with the PlayStation 4. During its reveal announcement at CES 2022, the system was described specifically as “next generation VR for the PS5.”
Furthermore, there have been no references made to the new headset working with the PS4. The announcement post on the PlayStation Blog simply mirrors the above information, calling PS VR2 the “next generation virtual reality system for the PS5.”
Ultimately, the current version of PSVR relies on the PS4’s processing power, but some games chug even when played on Pro models. It’s very likely that the higher-end capabilities of PS VR2 can only be achieved with the power of the PlayStation 5 hardware.
