The next Final Fantasy 14 expansion is in the works, and fans are wondering what its release date will be. Endwalker closed out Square Enix’s story through ten years of updates, and the next expansion will begin the next journey. We’ll take a look at what that story might be and when the next FFXIV expansion might release below.
Next Final Fantasy 14 expansion release date rumors
Square Enix hasn’t announced the release date for the Next Final Fantasy 14 expansion yet. Endwalker just dropped a few months ago, and we’ve got a while to wait before we get an official name or launch information.
The game has received an expansion every two years since it was relaunched as A Realm Reborn in 2013. Looking at the dates these large updates were released, we can extrapolate when the next expansion may launch:
- Heavensward: June 23, 2015
- Stormblood: June 20, 2017
- Shadowbringers: July 2, 2019
- Endwalker: December 7, 2021
So, aside from Endwalker, we got a new expansion at almost two years on the dot. Unfortunately, it was delayed due to COVID-19, which hopefully won’t affect development again. If no major world disasters occur, we hypothesize that the next expansion for Final Fantasy 14 will release between June-December 2023.
What will the story be?
Producer Naoki Yoshida has stated that he anticipates FFXIV will run for at least another decade. So the next expansion should kick off the narrative that will take us through the next ten years. We haven’t got any hints on what that’ll be yet, but we imagine that we’ll start to learn about it in the major updates bridging Endwalker and the next expansion.
Is it in production?
Yoshida has confirmed that there will be another expansion for FFXIV and that it’s currently being worked on. The game has been a huge success (too successful sometimes) for Square Enix, and the massive influx of players over the last year has likely solidified the company’s faith in the MMO.
