PlayStation Plus is getting an overhaul, with Sony adding two new tiers to its popular subscription service. Starting in June 2022, PS Plus will offer Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. These will be priced according to the number of features they offer. Essential will be the cheapest and worth it to most players, while Premium will be the most expensive and worth it to more hardcore fans. PS Plus Premium vs Extra vs Essential: What are the differences?
PS Plus Premium
PS Plus Premium costs $17.99 a month.
Joining the two monthly downloadable games, exclusive discounts, cloud storage, and online multiplayer are a catalog of up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games that can be downloaded to be play, as well as up to 340 more games that include PS3 games (to be streamed) and “catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2, and PSP generations.”
The PS Plus Premium tier also includes time-limited game trials, so customers can try “select games” before they buy.
PS Plus Extra
PS Plus Extra costs $14.99 a month.
In addition to the two monthly downloadable games, exclusive discounts, cloud storage, and online multiplayer access, players get access to a catalog of up to 400 of “the most enjoyable PS4 and PS5” games.
The PS4 and PS5 games included in the Extra tier are downloadable for play. (You won’t need to stream them!)
PS Plus Essential
PS Plus Essential costs $9.99 a month. It offers the same benefits as the previous iteration of PS Plus.

Which PS Plus tier is worth buying?
For most players, PS Plus Essential is going to be the subscription tier to choose. It includes everything that came in the previous PlayStation Plus iteration, which is likely to satisfy most players.
However, for those who want access to a big catalog of PS4 and PS5 games to download and play, Extra becomes tempting for only $5 more.
Premium is going to be for those who not only want a catalog of modern games, but also classic titles. For those who can make use of the up to 740 total games across the PlayStation catalog, then the $17.99 asking price may be worth it.
