Is iPhone 6 Still Good in 2022 and Does it Still Get Updates?

Apple devices are known for their longevity, and you don’t need the latest and greatest iPhone to get an excellent experience and current updates. Plenty of people upgrade to iPhone models are several years old because of price concerns. Given how cheap they are now, some people are wondering if the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus are still good in 2022 and if they’re still getting iOS updates.

Is the iPhone 6 still good in 2022?

iPhone 6 Updates

Each person’s interpretation of the word “good” is subjective, so there’s no definitive answer for whether the iPhone 6 is still good in 2022. It released on September 19, 2014, which was eight years ago. That’s an eternity in the smartphone world. For perspective, it came out closer in time to the launch of the original iPhone than it did to the iPhone 13.

Spec-wise, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are antiquated. For example, it only has 1 GB of LPDDR3 RAM compared to the 6 GB of LPDDR4X found in the iPhone 13 Pro. It also lacks 5G, has a slower dual-core CPU, and will underperform when it comes to running modern apps.

However, there is one circumstance where it might be perfect. For a kid’s first phone, it’s incredibly affordable. It does have LTE, so it can still easily make phone calls and connect to the internet, and if it gets broken or lost, you’re only out $100-150.

Does it still get updates in 2022?

The last version of iOS to support the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is iOS 12. However, even though iOS 13 launched in 2019, the iPhone 6 didn’t stop receiving updates. Patches have continued to be released for iOS 12, and the latest version, 12.5.5, came out on September 23, 2021. However, since the device is on extended support, you can’t count on Apple to continue releasing updates. The oldest devices to be supported by iOS 15 are the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. So, if you want to ensure you continue to receive long-term support, then you should pick up one of those phones (which are roughly the same price as the 6 and 6 Plus).
