DayZ: How to Make a Splint and Heal a Broken Leg

Learning how to make a splint in DayZ can make this brutal game just a bit more tolerable. Unfortunately, fracturing a bone can result in a quick death if you don’t have a way to set it (especially if you don’t have a friend). So, here’s how to heal your leg and get your movement speed back to normal.

How to craft a splint and heal a fractured bone in DayZ

DayZ Splint Recipe

To craft a splint in DayZ, you have to use one of two recipes:

  • 1 Bandage + 2 Short Sticks
  • 4 Rags + 2 Short Sticks

Either of these recipes will yield a single splint. However, take note that the bandage must be completely unused for the recipe to work.

You can obtain rags by using a bladed weapon on a piece of clothing, which is plentiful throughout all available maps. Short sticks are a bit harder to find, but you just need to make your way to a bush or small tree to harvest one. However, you’ll need to take care. You can take bleed damage if you attempt to do this without gloves.

When you break a leg, you’ll immediately fall to the ground and be stuck in the prone position. If you try to stand up and walk at this point, you’ll start taking shock damage and fall into unconsciousness in a few steps. So, your best bet at this point is to stay prone and apply a splint.

Once you have the splint, you can apply it to your broken leg. After setting the bone, you can walk slowly and climb over small obstacles. However, you won’t be able to run or jump until the leg has healed.

To start healing the fracture, you must be at max health, have max blood, and have plenty of energy and hydration. Once those conditions are met, the bone will take around an hour to heal. However, applying the splint cuts that time in half to around 30 minutes.

The upside to this is that if you have a leg fracture, you can’t get another (with one exception). So, at least you can’t break both legs accidentally. The exception to this is if you get caught in a bear trap. If this happens, you can indeed end up with two fractures.
