Most of the trailers for Splatoon 3 have been focused on the game’s multiplayer modes, but the campaign has traditionally had the role of introducing newcomers to inking turf and using weapons before heading onto the multiplayer battlefields. Here’s our guide as to whether Splatoon 3 will have a campaign or other form of story mode.
Will Splatoon 3 have a campaign or story mode?
Splatoon 3 will have a campaign called “Return of the Mammalians”. This new story mode can be accessed through a manhole in Splatsville Square that leads to the home of Octarians, the enemies of the Inklings. As the newest recruit of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, Agent 3 will join forces with her sidekick Smallfry to discover the secrets of this new world called Alterna, a large snow-covered area covered in a hazardous Fuzzy Ooze that will cover her in fur if she goes too close. The world features many stages full of twists and turns and puzzles to solve.
The Octarian army is reappearing as the main enemy, although the majority of them are now very hairy. While mammals like Judd and Li’l Judd have been confirmed to appear in the game, it’s thought there will be more mammals in the campaign that will explain how the story connects to its title theme. Other familiar faces include the Squid Sisters, Callie and Marie, as well as the former Agent 3 who has become the Captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon.
“Return of the Mammalians” has been described as the epic finale of the Splat-tastic saga, which suggests that Splatoon 3 is the final game in the trilogy. Whether this means the end of the Splatoon franchise or whether Splatoon 4 will have a completely new storyline is yet to be revealed.
