There is no Better Call Saul season 7 release date, with all signs pointing to ‘Saul Gone’ being the finale of the entire show. However, that’s not to say that this is the end of the Breaking Bad universe — even if its creator acknowledges that continuing it might not be the best idea.

Breaking Bad creator and Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan spoke about potentially revisiting their universe for another spin-off, telling Rolling Stone that he’s leaving the door open for future projects.

“I can definitely imagine revisiting it,” he said. “Selfishly, I’d like to do so, to keep this thing going.

But he also noted that there can be too much of a good thing and that revisiting the Breaking Bad universe could be detrimental to the integrity of what has already been created.

“But without naming any names, I look around at some of the worlds, the universes, the stories that I love, whether they’re on TV or in the movies,” Gilligan continued. “And I think there’s a certain point, and it’s hard to define, where you’ve done too much in the same universe. Just leave it alone.”

Still, AMC would inevitably love for Vince Gilligan and Better Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould to return to this world for more shows, with AMC President of Entertainment Dan McDermott telling Variety: “I can tell you that if I could do anything to encourage Vince and Peter to continue on in this universe, I would do it.”

Better Call Saul closed the book on Jimmy McGill’s story in the best possible way, with him finally shedding the Saul Goodman persona and owning up to his crimes. Fans have suggested that a Kim Wexler spin-off would work, as her fate is still up in the air following the finale, but much of her story has already been told in Better Call Saul.

Outside of Kim, the number of characters who could be the subject of a spin-off series is limited. Mike could be an option, though a new actor would likely have to be cast to show the character’s younger years — an idea most fans would reject, given actor Jonathan Banks’ incredible portrayal of him. Otherwise, most characters have had key moments from their backstories already explored by both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, leaving few stones left unturned.

Still, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould could come up with a brand new idea in the future that is set in the same universe, though doesn’t focus on any of Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul’s central characters. We’ll have to wait and see if that winds up being the case.
