The Last of Us Part 1 Tool Locations: Where to Find All Toolboxes

You’ll need to find five tools in The Last of Us Part 1 to upgrade your weapons. Unfortunately, the toolbox locations are easy to overlook, which means you might inadvertently skip one and not have the ability to backtrack. They’re also needed for the “For Emergencies Only” trophy, which requires you to fully upgrade all your weapons. So, you’ll want to grab the tools on your first go around.

The Last of Us Part 1 Tools

The five tools in The Last of Us Part 1 are found in these locations:

  • Bill’s House (Chapter 4)
  • Garage (Chapter 5)
  • Sewers (Chapter 6)
  • Science Building (Chapter 8)
  • Military Tent (Chapter 10)

Tool #1

You’ll find the first tool in the basement of Bill’s house in Lincoln, Massachusetts, after he shows you how to make the Nail Bomb.

If you miss this tool in the basement, another will appear in a garage just before the high school.

Tool #2

When you reach Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the start of chapter 5, you’ll wind up in a garage once you get passed the first fight with the Hunters. Inside is a toolbox with this tool.

Tool #3

Right after Ellie fixes the generator, you’ll ride a platform. Once across, look to the left for a storage room containing this tool.

If you miss that tool, another one will spawn in this chapter. Everyone will get separated by a metal gate near the end of the chapter. There’s a room past a bunch of infected that leads to a set of steps. Climb them and enter the room at the top to find a toolbox.

Tool #4

In chapter 8, make it to the second floor of the science building. Head down the corridor and look on the right for a shiv door. Open it, and you’ll find a toolkit inside.

Tool #5

After the scene with the giraffes, Joel will talk to Ellie about his time in a FEDRA camp. While the cutscene plays, he’ll walk past a large FEDRA tent. When the scene ends, enter that tent and look on a table for the tool.

Note, tools carry over between games. So, you keep any tools you find, and you can find ones you missed in New Game Plus.
