The Callisto Protocol is the first game from Dead Space creator Glen Schofield’s Striking Distance Studios and the survival horror game will be coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One as well as PS5, PS4, and PC. With many games coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one, here’s our guide as to whether The Callisto Protocol will be one of those games.
Will The Callisto Protocol come to Xbox Game Pass?
The Callisto Protocol is unlikely to be coming to Xbox Game Pass. Striking Distance Studios has thought about bringing the game to subscription services but believes “as a single-player linear game, it’s really hard to be successful in those types of services”. The studio’s CTO Mark James told TrueAchievements that while Microsoft is able to get Xbox Game Pass to work with their own games, it’s not as easy for a third-party studio:
“Microsoft has their own single-player games within the service, and I still think you’re going to see the platform holder studios provide single-player games in them. I’m just saying as a financial model, it’s a difficult one to make work as an independent studio. I think you’re going to see single-player games, but it will probably come from the hardware companies. As an independent, third-party, it’s really hard to make a linear third-person game work within those services. I’m not saying never; it’s hard financially to make that work.”
James also explained that The Callisto Protocol is a single-player game that is meant to be played a limited number of times whereas the studio believes Game Pass is “built towards some of the open-world style and repetitive multiplayer games” as these “survive well on that service.”
The Callisto Protocol will be available on December 2, 2022, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC. The game is unlikely to be coming to Xbox Game Pass.
