Netflix is launching its ad subscription tier in November. It’ll debut in Canada, France, Germany, the U.K., and the U.S. and will cost $7-9 per month. Ad frequency will be surprisingly modest, but there are still some unknown variables that might not make this the savings people are hoping for.
How much will ad-supported Netflix cost?
Netflix ad-tier will cost around $7-9, according to a leak from Variety. This is in line with Disney+ Basic, which will also feature ads and launch on December 8 at $7.99. However, there are no details about whether existing tiers will go up in price or if the $9.99 Basic Tier will be eliminated. We also don’t know if the ad-supported package will include HD and Ultra HD and how many screens it’ll support.
How many ads will it have?
Surprisingly, the leaked ad timing is relatively generous compared to the competition. Netflix will allegedly be running 4 minutes of ads per hour watched for TV series. Movies are said only to get pre-roll ads, allowing viewers to enjoy the film without interruption.
Of course, Netflix may postpone the launch of its ad-tier if it decides the time isn’t right. However, with it launching multiple stinkers, which each cost tens of millions of dollars, it really needs a way to get new subscribers fast.
