A Hogwarts Legacy missing save fix is luckily available for lost files on PC. Multiple players who have the game on Steam report that their character has disappeared due to the game’s auto and manual saving system. There can also be trouble with how this system interacts with cloud saves on Steam, causing local PC files to vanish, reappear, or not be detected at all. Here’s how to repair a lost Hogwarts Legacy save file.
How to fix a Hogwarts Legacy missing save file
Here are some steps to fix a Hogwarts Legacy missing save:
- Quit your game immediately. You don’t want the game’s auto-save system to overwrite your past saves.
- Go to your save folder for Hogwarts Legacy. This is usually under C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Hogwarts Legacy\
- Copy the save folder to the desktop or another folder.
- Play the game with a new character until a file called “HL-00-10.sav” is in the folder.
- While the game is still running, go to your copied folder and take the most recent save and place it there, renaming it to “HL-00-10.sav” and overwriting the existing file. (If you want to be safe, you can then force quit the game at this point by pressing Alt+F4.)
- Load the auto-save tied to your old file and your save should be recovered.
A part of the reason for this error could be that the game is using saves on the Steam cloud, regardless of whether the feature disabled or not. So the steps above essentially forces the game think that your old save is actually a cloud save. Hopefully, Avalanche Software will be able to repair this missing save issue, but until then, there’s at least a workaround.
