The Baldur’s Gate 3 Memory Shard is an item that you can find on the corpse of the drow Dhoum. You’ll encounter this character in the Underdark during a fight with a beholder boss called Spectator, which takes place close to the Selunite Outpost. Unfortunately, in many cases you’ll likely fight Dhoum as part of the battle and so you’ll grab this Memory Shard from his corpse without having much context of what it is. Like other items, you might assume that the purpose of the item will become apparent later on in your exploration of the Underdark. Here’s what the Memory Shard is supposed to do and how to use it.
What does the Baldur’s Gate 3 Memory Shard do?
The Memory Shard is an item you can use from the inventory to gain the location of the Adamantine Forge.
If you right-click on the Memory Shard in your inventory, you can select “Use” to trigger a cutscene where you can further interact with the item. Passing an Arcana (Intelligence) check will let you see images of where the fabled Adamantine Forge is located in the Underdark. You might already have a side quest about the Adamantine Forge by reading various books in the Underdark, but this adds more information so you can locate it.
All is not lost if you fail the Arcana check. Casting the Speak with Dead necromancy spell on Dhoum, perhaps from the Amulet of Lost Voices found in the Overgrown Ruins early in the game, will allow you to ask him a question on the memory shard. One of these is learning the passcode for the memory shard. Once you learn it, you can interact with the memory shard again and use the passcode to bypass the Arcana check altogether.
That said, it’s not necessary to use the Memory Shard to put you on the path toward the Adamantine Forge. As indicated earlier, you can read several documents throughout the game that mention the forge, and you can continue your exploration of the Underdark and discover it naturally.
