Figuring out who Walter is in Armored Core 6 is one of the central mysteries of the game. Unit 621’s handler illegally lands on Rubicon under the guise of making money. However, he obviously has a stronger connection to the planet than he implies. So, who is Walter, what are his ultimate goals, and does he die?
Who is Walter in Armored Core 6 and does he die?
As you play through Armored Core 6, you’ll notice that Walter knows more than someone new to Rubicon should. He’s in touch with all the key players and instantly lines up jobs for Unit 621, despite them being an illegal, small-time mercenary. Obviously, his word carries a lot of weight among the who’s who of Rubicon.
While Walter tries to keep the guise of an unconcerned mercenary, he’s obviously partial to the rogue elements present on Rubicon. He doesn’t push you too hard in any direction, but he has a softer tone when dealing with the Rubicon Liberation Front and “Cinder” Carla.
We eventually learn that Walter is part of a group called “Overseer,” which was formed in the aftermath of the Fires of Rubicon. Overseer’s members vowed to ensure that Coral is never exploited by corporations again by any means necessary. To achieve this goal, they plan to burn the Coral a second time, destroying it and leaving it unusable for anyone. Walter apparently dies following the underground exploration of the Coral convergence in Chapter 4. The corporation forces see him as a threat to their control of Coral, and eliminate him.
If you decide to follow Walter’s wishes and follow Carla’s route, you’ll end up defeating Arye on the Closure System satellite, and Carla will ram the Coral Collector. When she does, a chain reaction will start, which ignites the Coral and renders Rubicon 3 uninhabitable. Unsurprisingly, this can be considered the bad ending where Unit 621’s name is cursed throughout inhabited space for causing the “Fires of Raven.”
