The Return to Moria crossplay is something The Lord of the Rings fans understandably want to know about. Cross-platform multiplayer is an important feature for this dwarven survival adventure in the LOTR franchise considering that it has up to eight-player co-operative play. The game is currently out for Windows via Epic Games Store, with the PS5 version delayed to December 5 and the Xbox Series X|S version being scheduled in early 2024. While the console ports are staggered in their release, it’s still important to know whether crossplay is coming so that you and your friends can join up. Here’s what we know so far about cross-platform play for Return to Moria for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Is there Return to Moria crossplay?
No, Return to Moria does not have crossplay at launch, but there are plans of adding it as an update along the game’s early roadmap.
The game’s director Jon-Paul Dumont from developer Free Range Games stated that crossplay is one of a few features that it is putting in the one-year post-launch plan, in an interview with WCCTech. On this roadmap, they also plan on launching the Xbox version of the game and shared world saves as part of “big technical updates.”
This is important to note since the official support page for the game on publisher North Beach Games’ website says that crossplay is “not currently available.” It says that “the team will be exploring all options when it comes to platforms and crossplay for future updates,” but the answer in the interview provides a bit more detail than that.
It’s unclear at this time how this will impact the PS5 version of the game, since it won’t support eight-player support at least at launch. Dumont says that they are looking into expanding the number of players on PS5 in the future. We’ll have to see if this also applies to the Xbox port of the game.
