Steam Adds Endorsement Clause to Its Subscriber Agreement

Steam's curator and broadcasting options allow users to filter through recommendations, but they also open themselves up to exploitation. In an attempt to prevent that kind of behavior, Valve has added an endorsement disclosure update to its subscriber agreement.

As outlined in the update to the page, "If you use Steam services (e.g. the Steam Curators' Lists or the Steam Broadcasting service) to promote or endorse a product, service or event in return for any kind of consideration from a third party (including non-monetary rewards such as free games), you must clearly indicate the source of such consideration to your audience."

Plenty of Steam curators share their genuine game recommendations with links to reviews, videos, and other supplementary materials. There's always the chance that a curator has some kind of deal with a third party though, so the new subscriber update clearly establishes boundaries to avoid confusion.

The curator and broadcasting services are still in their infancy on Steam, but it's good to see Valve taking steps to improve them.
