Fans of Alan Wake continue to hope for a potential sequel, and a recent Polygon feature addresses the topic of Alan Wake 2. It also includes footage of an internal prototype that hasn't been previously released.
The 13-minute video establishes the premise of the game, in which a documentary filmmaker tackles the urban legend of Alan Wake and his disappearance. It also includes gameplay footage, with Alan Wake's signature flashlight/gun combo.
The prototype highlights increased interactions between enemies and the environment, a way in which Remedy Entertainment hoped to create a more immersive experience. The company also introduced a new puzzle element in the prototype that requires players to use dark energy to change things, thus "making fiction reality."
Development of Alan Wake 2 never made it past the prototype, and some of the elements from the video were eventually used in Alan Wake's American Nightmare. The downloadable follow-up to the original game came out in 2012.
Remedy is currently working on Quantum Break, but that doesn't mean the company plans to rule out Alan Wake 2 completely. According to creative director Sam Lake, "…all of this extra time to think it about it has made it tastier and more exciting." I'm sure many fans agree.
