Microsoft plans to launch DirectX 12 with Windows 10 later this year, and the company joined forces with Square Enix to show off a tech demo demonstrating the power of the new API.
Square Enix's real-time "art & tech" demo, titled WITCH – Chapter 0 [cry], made an appearance at the BUILD 2015 developer conference. It stars Agni from a previous Square Enix tech demo in striking detail.
Apparently DirectX 12 can include 63 million polygons per scene. According to the video, every piece of hair on Agni's head is its own polygon.
The entire tech demo is worth a look. It's an impressive demonstration of DirectX 12, and it'll be interesting to see how the API fares in more practical applications such as real-time gameplay.
