Blizzard Announces World Championship Tournament for Heroes of the Storm

Buzz for Heroes of the Storm continues to grow as it nears the open beta phase next week and eventual release in early June. Now Blizzard has an exciting announcement for the most competitive players out there: it's introducing a global tournament for BlizzCon.

In a press release this morning, the company announced the Heroes of the Storm World Championship. The top eight teams will compete at BlizzCon in Anaheim on November 6-7. The prize pool totals $1.2 million in cash and prizes, with a $200,000 payout for the winning team.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, expressed his company's enthusiasm for the tournament.

“We’re excited to kick off the inaugural Heroes of the Storm tournament series, and we can’t wait to see the best teams start to distinguish themselves in battle,” he said. “With the world championships for StarCraft II, World of Warcraft Arena, Hearthstone, and now Heroes of the Storm underway, 2015 is shaping up to be a great year for eSports fans.”

The Road to BlizzCon begins later this month in China, with more tournaments in North America, Australia, Europe, and other regions in the following weeks. Heroes of the Storm officially launches on June 2.
