Overwatch 2 reveals new looks for McCree, Reaper, Pharah, Widowmaker

Overwatch 2 didn’t come to BlizzCon 2021 (or BlizzConline) with any new heroes or a release date, but it did bring some updated looks at the title. Small gameplay changes and system overhauls were lightly detailed, but the bigger takeaway was arguably the new skins for a few cast members, which also happened in BlizzCon 2019. Blizzard revealed these Overwatch 2 Reaper, McCree, Pharah, and Widowmaker designs as the new default look for each hero.

The new Overwatch 2 McCree skin

McCree’s new threads for Overwatch 2 still reflects his original look. Arnold Tsang, character art director at Blizzard, stated that the team wanted to retain McCree’s classic cowboy outfit and not make him too techy. They decided to keep his hat and red serape, as those items were key to his soul, but wanted to give him a longer beard to age him up a bit.

The new Overwatch 2 Reaper skin

Reaper’s Overwatch 2 look hasn’t changed much as Blizzard wanted to keep his silhouette the same; a common theme in making characters for video games. Tsang tried to figure out more ways to integrate his cloak, cowl, and armor, which is evident in the final look. His outfit is slightly mixed around here and there, but his mask is now all silver, which Tsang said gave him the “classic Reaper look.”

The new Overwatch 2 Pharah skin

Pharah looks like she got new armor for Overwatch 2. Tsang said the team didn’t want to change her silhouette too much and it was about experimenting with different colors, which is why they went back to the original white and blue. Her visor is the biggest change as it is now more transparent, allowing players to more readily see her face.

The new Overwatch 2 Widowmaker skin

Widowmaker’s Overwatch 2 skin seemed to go through more iteration than the rest as Tsang described how Blizzard went from insectoid skins to one more oriented with treasure hunting. They then settled on the above skin, which they said was more a cyberpunk skin that made her seem like a futuristic femme fatale. Tsang said the team really liked the braided ponytail as it kept her silhouette the same while also being an interesting change.
