Despite the excitement surrounding Shenmue 2 finally getting a sequel, the announcement of a Shenmue 3 Kickstarter during Sony's press conference last month at E3 definitely rubbed more than a few gamers the wrong way.
How could such an ambitious game be possibly made on such a tiny Kickstarter budget? If Sony is tossing some of its own money into the project, why go to crowd-sourcing methods in the first place? Sure, Shenmue has its band of loyal fans, but they are a rare breed; is there really enough interest in a project like this for it to find success in today's video game landscape?
In fact, GameRevolution's own Heath Hindman just recently broke down the Kickstarter controversy in great detail. Behold.
Fortunately for Shenmue fans, it looks like there is. The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign has broken records, and series creator Yu Suzuki is considering making future installments beyond this third entry. It appears a revitalization for the series may be on the horizon, and a new trailer for the game, which was just posted on its Kickstarter page, will undoubtedly instill some faith in fans who've been salivating for years for a faithful third game.
Give it a look below.
