“Ready Player One” Film Adaptation Finds Release Date

According to the IMDb, the 2011 video game and '80s-nostalgia trip Ready Player One was optioned for the big screen, and is currently set to be directed by Stephen Spielberg.

Today the film was given a release date of December 15, 2017. Ernest Cline’s novel takes place in a dystopian future where everything is tied into an all-encompassing VR system named OASIS, where main character Parzival lives much of his life searching for clues to a treasure nobody’s sure is even real. But once he cracks the first code, the kid from the slums becomes not only a target, but a contender for the final prize: control of the OASIS itself.

The book was optioned by Warner Brothers the same day Cline signed a deal with his publisher for the book in 2010, with the script written by the author. There aren’t any actors confirmed to be onboard yet, but with Spielberg at the helm—a man with a history of involvement in the gaming industry—it’s sure to be at least well directed.

Ready Player One is tangential to being a “video game movie” in the same way Slumdog Millionaire was a game show film. That said, are you interested in this film adaptation? Do you have any opinions on potential actors? Let us know in comments!
