Konami Says MGS5: The Phantom Pain Already Won Game of the Year

2015 is a great year for gaming. With RPGs like Bloodborne and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, fun competitive games such as Rocket League and Heroes of the Storm, as well as classically-inspired titles like Pillars of Eternity there's something for everyone. Given there are several high-profile games left to release, 2015's game of the year awards are sure to be dense with competition.

Even then, there's one company who believes that its product has already secured a reputation as being game of the year 2015: Konami. Speaking to MCV UK it shared how the remarkably positive reception for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has confirmed its stance on the title being the greatest game of the year.

Marketing executive Jon Edwards stated:

Basically, it is the most engrossing and stunning game of the year,

He added:

It’s the game of the year – guaranteed.

Konami's employees, or what's left after its tumultuous restructuring, certainly aren't lacking in confidence.

Konami has recently come under scrutiny for abandoning its drive to make high-budget AAA games to instead focus on the lower risk of mobile gaming. This comes following financial hardship by the company which was challenged by a lengthy development cycle for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain spear-headed by one of the most hardcore perfectionists in the industry, Hideo Kojima.

The result of Konami's multi-year investment in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is one of the highest-rated games of all time. Standing at a 95 Metacritic score, it is a game that has outperformed all but one of its predecessors (Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty) as well as all but around 44 games in the history. It's likely to win its fair share of game of the year awards, but will face challenge from the multitude of other great games in 2015.
