Battlefield 3 Aims to Avoid DRM

So far, Battlefield has been unaffected by it because we have a multiplayer online game where you need to be logged in, so we haven't had any huge problems with it.

That's DICE's Karl-Magnus Troedsson, speaking about Battlefield 3's current DRM situation. Of course, a massive company like Electronic Arts wouldn't let their leading holiday software out in the open without some form of protection, right?

We've had other titles that have been hit hard by it, so piracy is still a problem. I'm not advocating Draconian DRM solutions. I don't believe that's the best way to do it. I'd rather have people buy our games, direct to consumer through different e-tailer solutions. And then by doing that, they should get something more in the game. I don't know… it could be early access or a boost pack for free or something like that. But piracy is definitely a problem.

Hey, I know of a great PC-digital-download service that essentially acts as DRM but with a wonderful, consumer-friendly overlay. It's called Steam. Too bad I won't be able to buy Battlefield 3 on that service. If you're hoping to get your hands on some of those incentives, including early beta access and some free DLC, you should probably preorder Battlefield 3 on Origin before its release on October 25th. I hate to admit it but I'll be installing whatever EA wants me to install simply because I want to play the damn game.
