Dark Souls III Can Slow to 20FPS on Xbox One

With Dark Souls III currently available in Japan—from which we've learned a lot about the game already—Digital Foundry put the game through its graphical paces on Xbox One.

While the PS4 version runs Dark Souls III at full 1080p, which isn't that surprising given that Bloodborne does as well, the Xbox One version outputs the game in the slightly lower 1600×900 resolution, essentially upscaling the 900p output to 1080p.

Dark Souls III only targets a v-synced locked 30fps on both consoles, which can lead to various forms of frame-stuttering. On Xbox One, this issue is more pronounced with Digital Foundry experiencing "a continuous stretch of play at 25fps in the opening section" with "frame-rates at near 20fps for larger-scale encounters on the High Wall of Lothric."

That said, they have yet to assess whether this dropped frame-rate occurs on PS4 as well so this may not be an isolated incident on Xbox One. FromSoftware may also be able to fix some of these technical issues between now and the game's release on April 12 worldwide.
