If Hideo Kojima could strap a Fulton recovery balloon on Metal Gear Survive, he would.
While on stage to present Death Stranding at Tokyo Game Show 2016, Kojima was asked about his involvement with Konami's Metal Gear Survive, the upcoming zombie offshoot based in the Metal Gear universe, and according to IGN, he was extremely clear about his thoughts on the game:
That's nothing to do with me! The Metal Gear games are about political fiction and espionage. Where do zombies fit in with that?
Character designer Yoji Shinkawa, who also worked on the Metal Gear series, subsequently chimed in a response:
If I had worked on that game, it would have mechs in it.
In light of this, a recent 15-minute play demo showcasing the stealth and defense gameplay of Metal Gear Survive uploaded to Konami's official YouTube channel has received an overwhelming number of dislikes. At the time of this writing, the video has 1,229 likes and 18,438 dislikes, a dismal 6.2% approval rating so far. As a point of comparison, the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare reveal trailer was better liked than this.
Amidst the maelstrom of angry comments, a few people believe that the game might actually be adequate if it didn't have Metal Gear attached to the name. It's like Kojima's absence is a phantom limb or something…
