We knew Marvel wouldn't be able to stay out of long-form narrative games forever, and, today, they've announced their plan for several games to come.
Originally announced on Twitter, accompanied by the video above, Marvel and Square Enix have announced a "multi-game" partnership that will start with The Avengers Project, which will be developed by Tomb Raider head Crystal Dynamics "in collaboration" with Eidos-Montreal. It's unclear if the other games in the series will also be developed by that studio or if they will be connected at all.
The Avengers Project will feature a "completely original" story, meaning it likely won't directly tie in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer above features a voice over, which many have assumed is Black Widow, urging the Avengers to "reassemble," implying that this story takes place in a time that the Avengers as we know them no longer exist for one reason or another.
Don't hold your breath for a release, though. According to the longer announcement, we won't even have more details on The Avengers Project until 2018, meaning a release date is likely going to be late 2018 or early 2019 at the earliest.
