Nintendo President Kimishima Confirms That Switch Is Powerful Enough for VR

It feels like just yesterday that virtual reality was little more than trade-show hype, but in 2017 the technology can be found in an increasing number of living rooms (and backpacks) everywhere. Much like with the onset of high definition, Nintendo is taking a cautious, measured approach to VR, though a recent interview with Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima suggests that the medium may be on-the-radar more so than expected.

Speaking with TIME, Kimishima had the following to say about virtual reality and the Switch's ability to support it.

.

What about virtual reality? Is the launch version of Switch powerful enough to support it?

The very simple answer is yes. We've said this before, and I feel like we're saying it a lot, but we are interested and doing research into this field. The question, of course, is "What is the best way to bring virtual reality to our customers as a form of entertainment?" Not just, "Hey, look! It's realistic!" or whatever, but what is the best way to use this technology to bring something fun to our consumer base? We are definitely looking at that.

.
It's not abundantly clear if this response is more placation than promise, but it is nice to hear that Nintendo intends on taking virtual gaming seriously, eventually, just like everyone else. I can't say I'd be all that interested in Zelda or Mario in VR, but how about Metroid Prime? That's something millions of people would absolutely get behind.
