Splatoon 2 Is Getting A PvE Co-Op Game Mode Similar To Horde And Call of Duty Zombies

Although a lot was announced during today's Nintendo Direct, Splatoon 2 was the highlight of the show.

To cap off the presentation, Nintendo showed off a new gameplay mode called Salmon Run that may sound familiar to fans of co-op in series such as Gears of War and Call of Duty.

In Salmon Run, four players will be responsible for defending themselves against a variety of A.I. controlled enemies, each with distinct attacks and movement patterns. Occasionally, much more powerful enemies will enter the map, such as the Steelhead, who require cooperation to take down.

The goal of the game mode is to not only defend yourself against approaching enemies, but collect eggs, and deliver them to an incubator toward the center of the map. Successfully achieved milestones will progress your team through subsequent waves that increase in difficulty.

Players who run out of health will drop a lifesaver, and players must tap a button near it in order to resurrect the player. Outside of this mechanic, many of the qualities of traditional Splatoon remain, including access to multiple classes of character, and "painting the map".

Lastly, Nintendo confirmed that three new Amiibo will arrive alongside Splatoon 2, including Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy, and Inkling Squid. These will unlock unique outfits in the game upon registration.

Both Splatoon 2 and the three Amiibos will release on July 21st.
