id Software Suffers a Round of Layoffs

It's always so incredibly sad to hear of layoffs in this industry of any kind, even if you aren't a fan of the studio/publisher. Even more sadly, we've seen this hit way too often as of late.

This time it is id Software, the developer behind Rage and the greatly nostalgic Doom series. Bethesda confirmed the news earlier today that a "number" of employees were released. See their full statement below:

As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go.

Id is still recruiting and hiring qualified developers, and development work on future id titles continues unabated.

It personally seems strange to me to be letting some employees go while still hiring for the same studio, but I suppose it could be just the employees who worked on a certain project that didn't pan out as expected. It's still sad either way, and we here at GR wish those former employees the best and that they will find new work soon.

We, however, are reassured that id is still working on Doom 4, but there is still no release date.
