BioShock Infinite Will Have a 1999 Difficulty Level

Apparently people miss the hard as shit difficulties from games past. You know, the games like Contra, that were so incredibly hard I don't know a soul who has beaten the game without using the Konami Code. If you're too young to remember Contra, then think of early SNES or N64 games. If you're too young for that, I hate you, and Irrational Games is about to pop your gaming bubble of safety.

BioShock Infinite is going to include a "1999 Mode", which will do more than adjust the amount of damage you can dish out and take. Creative director Ken Levine called himself an old school gamer in the announcement, and explained that he wanted to take these gamers into account when they play the newest BioShock.

So, for all of you who miss dying by getting bumped by an enemy, here is what you can expect out of this old school 1999 Mode:

  • specific features that have not yet been named that will not exist in the normal BioShock Infinite difficulties;
  • "demading weapon, power, and health management;" and
  • a traditional "Game Over" screen if the player doesn't have the resources to respawn.

I'm more of a story gamer, so I don't miss those days of yore. Therefore, I will not be sampling this balls-hard mode as I don't miss throwing my controller. There's a reason why I haven't tried Demon's Souls or Dark Souls. But enough of me; are you looking forward to getting punished old school?
