Nintendo 3DS Sales Reach 4.5 Million Units In First Year

March 27, 2012 marks the 3DS' first birthday, and it will also mark a new sales record of selling 4.5 million units in the US. I think they know that this success all goes toward the price cut they instituted within months of launching the device.

Nintendo predicted last year that the 3DS would beat the DS' first year sales, and while we all laughed at such a preposterous statement, it's proven to be true. The original DS sold 2.3 million units during its first year of life and didn't really pick up steam until the release of the DS Lite.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime attributes the 3DS' success to its extensive game library, which definitely put the origina DS' to shame. "With a massive lineup of first- and third party games and more on the way, a budding library of entertainment options and an engaged and growing installed base, Nintendo 3DS has an incredibly bright future," he said. "We're just getting started, but this platform is built for the long haul."

That is, it is built for the long haul until the 3DS Lite comes out, correct?
