Epic Games VP Likes Wii U, “Shocked If It Doesn’t Do Well”

Epic Games has been a strong supporter of the Xbox 360 and PS3 this generation, shipping Gears of War and Unreal Tournament titles on the beefy bretheren in the console market. While the Wii was counted out more than a few times, Epic Games VP Mark Rein likes the Wii U and hopes to see it do well this year.

I like the Wii U. I think E3 [2012] will be a big eye-opener for people. Do you remember the Zelda demo they had on it? Would you not buy a Wii U just to play that? Of course you would. That's what Nintendo is all about. Their hardware is the software delivery service for their great content. I'd love it if they'd [launched] last year, but I'm excited for them to do it this year. I'd be shocked if it doesn't do well.

Unreal Engine-powered titles are already slated for Nintendo's Wii U, like Batman: Arkham City (which I will buy 50 copies of), but Rein has said that there are currently no plans to develop titles for the new console.

If I had 10 development teams I'd make a game for every single platform and make that the special game for that platform. But we don't have 10 development teams, so it's just a matter of picking and choosing what we do and doing the best thing we can for the idea that we have.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if this tune was changed on the Nintendo Press Conference stage at E3 2012. Really, Unreal Engine 3 is the leading development engine on the Xbox 360 and PS3 and I'm sure it'll perform very well on the Wii U. Something from Epic will eventually land on the system, I'm sure.
