WayForward Developing Double Dragon Remake

My inner child squealed with glee when I read that Double Dragon was getting a remake for XBLA and PSN. When I saw that WayForward was heading up the project, my outer child squealed as well.

So yes, it is true! WayForward Technologies is working with Majesco to reboot Double Dragon—a CLASSIC side-scroller from the arcade and NES era—and give it a fresh coat of paint. They have named it Double Dragon: Neon, and, since the game originated in the 80s, the fresh coat of paint will be a nostalgic 80s style. It is currently scheduled for July 2012.

For all of you young'uns out there who have no idea what Double Dragon is, it's a side-scrolling beat-em-up starring the Lee brothers, Billy and Jimmy, as they fight through hordes of enemies to do the most 80s goal imaginable: save the girl. The girl in this case is Billy's girlfriend, Marian, so at least there some actual emotional ties, unlike a certain princess who had to be saved by plumbers.

In this rendition though, expect to have all the zanyness of 80s culture thrown up everywhere. Yes, there are neon lights, and the soundtrack is slathered in 80s styles that none of us admit to ever liking. You may want to keep a pair of sunglasses and earplugs by you, so that the fluourescence doesn't blind you and the synth doesn't make your eardrums bleed.

I have a huge, nostalgic soft spot for Double Dragon. I'm sure the game was actually awful, but that won't matter to me. I'll never stop thinking about going over to my friend's house when I was a child most afternoons so we could play it together. Ah, memories.
