Epic Scraps Plans For Gears of War Spinoff

Epic's highly anticipated Gears of War spinoff is unfortunately no more, as the company has just announced that they've officially canceled the project. While the developer never shared any concrete details about the game, Gears of War: Exile was rumored to be an on-rails shooter built from the ground up to take full advantage of the Kinect.

A trademark for the title was filed way back in January of last year and until now, we hadn't heard anything official about the game. While the Kinect is undoubtedly a pretty interesting piece of technology, it really has yet to prove its worth as a viable control scheme. Considering the buddy-buddy relationship that Epic has with Microsoft, I'm willing to bet that the Gears team started up Exile primarily to build support for the platform, and when the game wasn't panning out like they had initially hoped, there was no other choice but to cancel it altogether.

Epic's Cliff Bleszinski didn't have a whole lot to say on the matter, making it clear that the studio wishes to drop it and move on. "Let's just bury the hatchet now. Gears of War: Exile was an unannounced game that I can't give any details about that has since been cancelled."

Knowing when to let something go is a virtue, and I don't know about you, but I'm glad that Cliff and the team decided to scrap it before spending even more money and energy into a product that likely wouldn't have been all that great. Their time is undoubtedly better spent elsewhere.

So how 'bout that Gears prequel guys?
