Sony was once the king of video game consoles, for nearly a decade. The original PlayStation broke hardware sales records, which its successor, the PS2, smashed to smithereens.
This console generation… not so much. The PS3 has been trailing behind the competition, largely in part due to the PS3's far more expensive price tag at launch. Sony has since been able to reduce component costs and turn the savings over to the consumers, bringing the Blu-ray equipped console to the market at a reasonable cost.
It's helped a lot, too, as Sony has now shipped over 50 million PlayStation 3s worldwide. That's not the only good news for Sony's hardware division. The PlayStation Move has managed to ship over 8 million units to retail channels.
Admittedly, I expected the PlayStation Move to perform even better considering its only 33% of the price of Microsoft's Kinect, which has moved over 10 million units in a shorter time period. And the fact that a lot of people buying a PlayStation Move are likely buying more than one so they can enjoy it with their family or friends. I alone own 3. No word as to how the Navigation sub-controller factors into these numbers or if they do at all.
That said, we fully expect PlayStation 3 to have a strong year this year and the next thanks to an amazing first-party software line-up, stereoscopic 3D support, and hopefully, a price drop.
So, who has a PlayStation Move? And if you do, do you own more than one? Let us know!
