Sakurai Discusses Super Smash Bros. 4, Core Mechanics To Remain Unchanged

Besides the fact that the fourth entry in Nintendo's popular brawling franchise is coming to both the Wii U and 3DS, we know next to nothing about the game, so when Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai spoke to IGN about the upcoming game, my eyes widened with delight. For those that are curious, Pikachu is my fighter of choice. Laugh if you want, but the yellow rat's thunderbolt packs one heck of a punch.

Since the game will be coming to the Nintendo's new console, Sakurai noted that they are currently looking into ways they can take advantage of the Wii U GamePad. However, he was also careful to point out that they don't plan on tacking on added functionality just because they can.

"The game system itself is complete, so we don’t want to make it 3D or introduce complicated controls just for the sake of it. However, I am thinking of ways we can introduce a slightly different, fun experience all the while keeping the usual frantic game play," he explained.

Sakurai went on to discuss the game's character lineup, pointing out that while having non-Nintendo characters like Solid Snake is fun, he doesn't want to dilute the roster with too many outside characters. "I think Snake and Sonic joining were fantastic. It made many fans happy, and it broadened the Smash Bros arena. However, introducing more non-Nintendo characters willy-nilly will lose the focus of the game, so I also recognize the need to narrow it down," Sakurai said.

This comes as a huge relief, especially in light of the news that Namco will behind the bulk of this game's development.
